The Education Centre in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Western Australia has been teaching a Personal and Professional Development Seminar Series to their first year students in 2002. This programme has been developed to ensure essential generic skills such as written and verbal communication, computer literacy and self-reflection are introduced at an early stage. The programme is integrated with material taught in core units of the Curriculum, therefore providing direct relevance to students. It provides a supporting role for students by arming them with the required information and skills to successfully carry out their studies, and introduces the concept that a student is also a Professional, with associated responsibilities. The programme encourages a proactive approach to learning and the importance of seeking help when required, thus hopefully contributing to an improved retention rate.
